Media Mindfulness: Guiding Students to be Savvy News Consumers

Join us as Dr. Florian Feucht demonstrates a daily media mindfulness exercise to help high school students become more aware of the news they are consuming. Media Mindfulness can be used to help students consider what pieces of news are relevant to their lives and how they emotionally connect to the information being presented. This can ultimately empower young people to lead more emotionally healthy and successful lives and to engage in meaningful ways in their communities.

All interested teachers will receive a free preview of the THINKING PRO program.

Local News as a Catalyst for News Media Literacy and Civic Engagement

Funded by a federal research and development grant, THINKING PRO is an online instructional program for high school students designed to improve students’ critical thinking skills, news media literacy, and civic engagement. This program will explore research-based tools for the high school classroom as Dr. Florian Feucht discusses:

    • interactive and self-paced instructional videos that model reading and critical thinking strategies,
    • close reading-and-writing assignments that further reinforce these strategies using local news, and
    • a culminating Capstone Project that provides an authentic learning experience as students select a local issue as a personal cause and develop a plan to advocate for change.

With the call for media literacy in many states, THINKING PRO is a valuable resource for educators. The curriculum is in close alignment with the C3 Framework for Social Studies, and particularly promotes growth in Dimension 3 and Dimension 4 as students emerge with improved news evaluation skills and a stronger desire to apply them as informed and engaged citizens. All interested teachers will receive free access to the THINKING PRO program.
