How Schools Use THINKING PRO to Elevate ELA Learning
Develop Essential Reading & Writing Skills for All Students
THINKING PRO builds a strong foundation in reading comprehension, critical thinking, and written expression. It supports 8th–11th graders — especially those needing stronger literacy skills — and offers targeted strategies for students reading below grade level or impacted by pandemic disruptions. By meeting diverse learning needs, THINKING PRO helps students grow across reading and writing benchmarks.
Prepare for Rigorous Honors, AP, and IB Courses
THINKING PRO prepares students for the demands of advanced academic work by strengthening research-based writing, analytical reading, and critical reasoning skills. It offers a structured framework for developing arguments, analyzing complex texts, and giving and receiving detailed feedback — essential competencies for success in Honors, AP, and IB English programs and beyond.
Engage with Real-World and Media Literacy Skills
THINKING PRO connects classroom learning to real-world contexts through the analysis of local news and current events. Students strengthen critical reading skills and build essential media literacy — a growing focus in ELA standards due to new state mandates. They learn to evaluate sources, detect bias, and engage thoughtfully with today’s complex digital information.
Offer Enrichment Opportunities for Advanced Middle School Learners
THINKING PRO | Essentials offers a flexible library of self-paced videos that strengthen reading comprehension, critical thinking, and informational writing. Teachers can enrich advanced 6th–7th grade students in regular ELA classrooms or gifted programs, extending literacy skills without adopting a full curriculum unit. It’s an effective way to deepen nonfiction reading and response.
Case Study: Raising Literacy and Teacher Confidence at Pinckney High School, MI
At Pinckney Community High School in Michigan, Principal Julia McBride implemented THINKING PRO across three years to help her ELA teachers improve student outcomes and align instruction with disciplinary literacy goals. The program provided on-site, team-based professional development — tailored to the school’s needs and focused on reading, writing, and critical thinking.
THINKING PRO equipped teachers with scaffolding strategies and differentiated tools to support learners at all levels. In 9th grade English, students engaged with interactive videos and real-world nonfiction to strengthen reading comprehension and develop meaningful writing responses — both inside and beyond the classroom.
In a single semester, 93% of students reached proficiency or higher in thinking strategies, and 89% in reading strategies, while 83% improved their overall scores from pretest to posttest. Across three years, 88% of students consistently achieved proficiency in reading, and 85% in thinking strategies — showing strong, sustained gains.
“I think this program really unlocked a part of my brain that I did not know that I had.”
— 9th Grade Student
“THINKING PRO really brought in some concrete examples of how to scaffold students’ reading, processing, and communication skills for my teachers.”
— Julia McBride, Principal
Whether supporting struggling readers or enriching advanced learners, THINKING PRO helps ELA teachers grow student literacy through real-world content and skill-based instruction.
